Chapter 7
AN UNBELIEVABLE WITNESS
On Monday after the Kentucky Derby, late in the evening, people started drifting into Peter Fullerâs room at the Brown Suburban Motel on Bardstown Road. The Fuller entourage had set up shop in the motel almost a week earlier, but the tone of this meeting was far different from the euphoria that followed the Kentucky Derby.
The positive drug test for Dancerâs Image would not be public knowledge for another twelve hours, not until Wathen Knebelkampâs press conference the next day, but everyone associated with the horse already knew about it. Fuller and Cavalaris had gotten unofficial notification, and anyone on the backstretch who saw investigators shaking down the Harthill Barn knew that something was amiss.
Fuller was there, as were trainer Lou Cavalaris, who had rushed back to Louisville from his home in Toronto; Dr. Alex Harthill; Fullerâs farm manager, Bob Casey; Paul Hyatt; the insurance agent, Ed McGrath; and Warner Jones. They were joined by Arthur Grafton, the attorney recommended to Fuller by Jones, Stuart Lampe and Ned Bonnie.
In other circumstances, this might have been a meeting for damage control, to figure out how to make the best of an unbelievably bad situation. But Peter Fuller had faith in his horse and in his trainer. He was a fighter, and he was totally unwilling to accept the disastrous turn of events.
With little preamble, Fuller started around the room asking if anyone had a theory to win the case against Dancerâs Image. No one did, not until Fullerâs attention settled on Bonnie. He was the youngest man in the room, and the least experienced, and everyone did a double take when he spoke up: âYes, I do.â
